Admissions
The purpose of the Committee on Demographic Training (CDT) is to promote interdisciplinary training in population studies at the University of Chicago. The Committee is composed of over 40 teaching faculty from the Economics department, the Sociology department, the Graduate School of Business, the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies, and the School of Social Service Administration.
The CDT is formally part of the Division of Social Sciences of the University of Chicago and is also closely related to the Population Research Center (PRC) and the Center on Aging (COA) at NORC and the University of Chicago. The current CDT chair is Robert Townsend, a professor in the Economics Department.
Support for training activities comes from the Population Research Center/NORC and from grants to the University of Chicago from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute on Aging, and the Hewlett Foundation. The NIH training grants provide stipends, tuition, fees, and/or travel expenses for the following number of fellows per year:
- NICHD: 4 pre-doctoral fellows, 2 postdoctoral fellows
- NIA: 4 pre-doctoral fellows, 2 postdoctoral fellows
- Hewlett: 6 pre-doctoral fellows, 1 postdoctoral fellow
The Committee on Demographic Training accepts applications for NIH pre-doctoral fellowships. Candidates should be working towards a Ph.D. in sociology, economics, or a related social science, who are interested in Population Studies. Holders of NIH fellowships must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The fellowships provide a one-year appointment, with a possibility of renewal; the start date is October. Fellowships pay a stipend, tuition, fees, and certain other expenses.
Applications should consist of:
- a sealed official transcript
- a statement of research goals
- one or more letters of reference from a member of the CDT
- a current curriculum vitae
Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Population Research Center accepts applications for five postdoctoral fellowships. Four fellowships, funded by NICHD and NIA, are for U.S. citizens and permanent residents interested in population studies. The fellowships are for the period of one year with a possibility of renewal. Stipends vary based upon experience level. The Hewlett fellowship is limited to Ph.D.s from developing countries.
Complete applications should include a curriculum vitae, a statement of research goals, at least two letters of reference, and a sample of written work.
Applications should be submitted to:
